  • Basic Diesel Training and Technician Certification

    This two-day training is designed for the technician with experience in the service and repair of marine inboard gasoline engines. It’s the training for technicians who want to advance those basic mechanical skills as they relate to marine diesel engines.

    Training is a combination of classroom and extensive hands-on engine lab exercises.

    Curriculum includes:

    • diesel engine theory
    • troubleshooting
    • compression testing
    • fuel testing
    • cooling system pressure & thermostat testing
    • injection system service
    • routing maintenance procedures.

  • Advanced Diesel Technician Training

    This three-day course is for the diesel engine technician who has mastered the basic marine diesel engine skills as covered in the ABBRA Basic Diesel Engine Technician Certification course, and who wants to advance those skills to those covered in the following curriculum.

    Coursework is a combination of classroom and extensive hands-on engine lab exercises. Preregistration testing is provided to employers who want to determine that their prospective enrollees for this program have the required experience to benefit from the course experience.

    Curriculum includes:

    • air intake
    • exhaust systems
    • fuel injection
    • component test procedures
    • introduction to electronic engine systems

  • Two-Part Certificate Composite Course

    This course consists of two parts. The first two days are an introductory course with general information about composite repair as well as lab activities. The second part is a more advanced course consisting of three days with more detail and lab activities. A final exam will be given on the last day.

    Two-day curriculum includes:

    • Composites
    • Assessing and repairing damage and why it occurs
    • Working with chemicals
    • Tools of the trade
    • Safety
    • Fiber reinforcement (carbon & Kevlar)
    • Resin
    • Surface preparation
    • The use of fillets and tabbing
    • Fiber/ Resin content – burn test

     

    Three-day advanced curriculum includes:

    • Types of cores (wood, foam, polypropylene)
    • Core composite repair
    • Osmotic blister repair
    • Fairing techniques
    • Insurance work & estimating discussions

  • Topcoat Application

    The three-and-a-half-day ABBRA Topcoat Application program will advance both the beginning and experienced topcoat applicator’s level of expertise in boat surface preparation, deepen the understanding of topcoat systems and application equipment and techniques, build skills in estimating and troubleshooting the job, and ensure thorough comprehension of current shop and personnel safety practices. Students will have plenty of shop projects to practice their mastery by preparing fiberglass panels for finish topcoat applications in a state-of-the-art paint workshop.

    Curriculum includes:

    • shop & worker safety
    • paint shop setup
    • the spray gun
    • surface preparation
    • sanding – abrasives; primers & application
    • fairing & the use of fairing compounds
    • topcoat & mixing
    • application & detailing
    • repairing topcoats
    • estimating paintwork

  • Gasoline EFI

    This three-day course provides marine technicians with hands-on gasoline EFI training. It covers fuel and electrical EFI component function and testing procedures for GM-based EFI inboard and I/O engines. Morning and afternoon sessions will be broken into sections of two-hour lectures followed by two-hour labs. Lectures will have lab demonstrations associated with them as well. A 50 question certification test will be given at the end of the course.

    Successful students will be able to:

    • Explain the function of gasoline EFI engine sensors
    • Test engine sensors for resistance opens, and shorts
    • Test wiring harnesses for resistance, opens, and shorts
    • Make repairs to Metripack and Weatherpack terminals
    • Test high and low-pressure fuel pumps
    • Test and diagnose fuel pump electrical systems for faults
    • Explain ECM engine-related functions

  • Marine Electrical Principles and Installation Course

    This training will focus on ABYC installation compliance for house batteries and inverter/charger installations. Some electrical knowledge will be beneficial for this training.

    This course will be offered alongside our Marine Diesel Engine Service and Diagnostics course March 18-19, 2025.
